Preliminary

First of all : what does "Internet of things" means ?

A common point of view is to think that every connected device can send data to a server.
But the real idea of 'Internet of things' is to connect all those billions of objects with each others. All those objects could be intelligent, interoperable and could act independently depending of the context.

All those things could use Internet to communicate. The new generation of Internet application (IPv6 protocol) would be able to manage all possible objects.

 

Which data exchange format to use to build the Internet of things ?

 

Now, there are a lot of standards (some of them are open) to let objects communication with others. But they are always used to send data(information or command) from one objet to an other. And most of time, It is used to control the receiver. Please see Zigbee, X10, RFID...

 

In case of Internet of things, all objects should communicate with each others and shoul be interoparable. But can you imagine a manufacturer leting an unknown device control their device ? Of course not !

Our point of view of Internet of things is slightely different.

The main idea is : all devices, equiped with a micro-processor, will work exactely the same as before, in stand-alone and would be able to use data from other sensors and devices. ONLY inputs are authorized. In this case, there should be no way to hack a device from its original use. BUT all devices could optimize their performances by using external data like temperature, humity, motion detection, ...

In this case, it should be not difficult for a manufacturers to adopt this point of view.

And to do that, WE NEED AN OPEN DATA EXCHANGE FORMAT to share data between devices.
